2026 Chief Registrars
The Chief Registrars are the peak representative body for the Junior Medical Staff through the Junior Medical Advisory and Co-design Committee (JMARC) and their links to the Program and Executive. We encourage all JMS to seek out the Chief Registrars – they are all very friendly!

Medical Administration - Sulakshan Rasiah
I’m Dr Sula Rasiah, a Medical Administration Registrar at Monash Health with a deep commitment to improving how we lead, manage, and support our healthcare workforce. I’m currently completing specialist training through the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA), with a focus on developing strong governance and system leadership within complex health environments.
In my current role, I’m dedicated to supporting our junior medical workforce by championing leadership development, wellbeing, and professional growth. As Chair of the Junior Medical Advisory and Redesign Committee (JMARC), I work closely with colleagues and leaders across Monash Health to create opportunities for junior doctors to shape change, strengthen their leadership capacity, and contribute to a culture of collaboration and excellence.
“Little by little, a little becomes a lot.” – Tanzanian proverb
Emergency - Joseph Vu
I’m Joseph, one of the senior registrars in the ED at Monash Medical Centre. I have been at Monash Health since beginning my internship here in 2018. I’m a proud dad to two daughters: my two-year-old Melody (pictured) and three-month-old Evie.
While the combination of being a new-ish parent and examination preparation occupies most of my time, I enjoy choral singing and composition, board / computer gaming (I’m a bit of a geek – ask me about my life before medicine!), photography and pretending that I have a green thumb.
I am a bit of a foodie and enjoy going out (perhaps too much) for a meal. I also quite frequently get the urge to jump onto a plane somewhere far away from here (in order to eat).

Intensive Care (DDH/Casey) - Jonathan Devine
I’m Jonathan, some people know me as JD. I’m an Intensive Care Medical Trainee with experience in Acute Medicine, Clinical Anaesthesia and Intensive Care across Monash Health. I’m also the Simulation Fellow at Monash Health Simulation and I’m passionate about simulation education and integrating simulation at the bedside. My special interests include crisis resource management, leadership and communication.
I enjoy all aspects of Intensive Care Medicine, in particular spending time with patients and their families, helping them navigate through the complexities of the Intensive Care Unit as part of their patient journey, and providing critical care in a timely manner.
When not at the patient bedside in Intensive Care or helping multi-disciplinary teams optimise their performances at Monash Simulation, I can be found spending time with my family or on my bicycle.
Please reach out to me for any issues or ideas to help make Monash Health an even better place for each other and our patients.
Intensive Care (MMC/VHH) - Benjamin Paul
Hello! It is my privilege to be the Chief Registrar for ICU at Monash Medical Centre Clayton and The Victorian Heart Hospital for the 2026-27 clinical year. As an ICU Senior Registrar, I look forward to representing and empowering the trainees and rotators that work in our units.
Apart from my critical care training, I also have a strong interest in quality, culture and systems change, having completed my AFRACMA in 2024, with ambitions to eventually dual train in Intensive Care and Medical Administration.
My greatest passions lie outside of work, spending time with my wife and cavoodle Laksa exploring local cafes, drinking coffee, running, playing sports and pottering around the garden.
Specialty Medicine - Ajinkya Bhonsle
I’m AJ and very excited to be one of the representatives for Specialty Med as Chief Reg! I’ve been at Monash since 2019 and see this health service as a second home! It’s made me the doctor I am today and It’s going to be great to give back. My day job has me doing final year of nephrology training. At night I’m either cooking new recipes, filming food whilst eating out way too much or playing the latest switch/PlayStation games!

Surgery - Joseph Jaya
I am Joe, I'm a general surgery trainee through Monash Health. I have been working at Monash Health since 2016. I also studied at Monash University and spent the majority of my clinical years at Monash Health. I feel like I've been here forever! I'm taking some time away from clinical training for the next few years to complete a PhD in hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery looking at small measures to improve the care and quality of life for patients with hilar cholangiocarcinoma. When I'm not at work (not that often), I can be found enjoying the underwater flora and fauna with my wife as we're both keen SCUBA divers. I also enjoy keeping healthy at the gym and cycling. Did I tell you I love a good strong coffee?
Medical Education Fellow - Kirstie Kirkley
Hello – I’m Kirstie, most of the time mistakenly known as ‘Kristie’, but I’ll respond to most things! I moved to Melbourne from Bristol in the UK after my PGY2 year and undertook a stream of surgical jobs at alternative health services before joining Monash Doctors Education as the Education Fellow this year. I spend half of my time within the education team and the other half as a junior registrar in ICU. Whilst my ultimate goal is to pursue a career in General Surgery, I saw this role as a unique opportunity to combine my passion for education & teaching, with the chance to step outside of my comfort zone and gain some alternative clinical experience.
Prior to moving to Melbourne, I set up a national teaching scheme and work experience programme for senior school students from disadvantaged backgrounds – helping them to gain more insight and experience in medical and allied health fields. I am passionate about improving diversity in the workplace and creating accessible, inclusive learning environments.
Outside of work, I love going to the gym to fuel my main hobby – baking & cooking. I make a mean chocolate croissant & cinnamon scroll and am doing my best to hone my schnitty skills!
Emergency - Shelly Yang
I'm Shelley, post fellowship exam Emergency Medicine co-chief for the first two terms of 2026. I am an immigrant from a non-English speaking background, and still can't do past tense consistently. I was previously a hospital microbiology scientist, and within medicine I have worked in various states, from tertiary centre all the way to a remote town with a population of less than 400. I am particularly interested in making night time in ED a more pleasant experience for everyone, patients and staff. I like sunscreen, vitamin D tablets, and fruit bat colonies. I take my art way too seriously and my craft nowhere seriously enough. I love gothic mysteries that ends with perfectly logical resolution, and find horror-flavoured liminal spaces most comforting
Monash Newborn - Ian Tang
Hi there - I'm Ian, one of the neonatal clinical fellows and chief registrar for Monash Newborn. I'm currently completing my final year of Neonatal and Perinatal training (hopefully), have worked across Monash Health at multiple stages of my training, including more recently as a General Paediatrician at Monash Children’s Hospital, and at Monash Newborn at Sandringham.
Outside of work, you’ll usually find me on the netball court (or nursing a netball injury), out for long walks with my Cavoodle and Japanese Spitz, or planning my next holiday. In this role, I’m keen to support JMS across Newborn Services with any issues (big or small) and help foster a positive and well-supported training environment and workplace.
Children’s (Paediatrics) - Emma Turton
Hi there! I'm Em, a paediatric trainee in the final few months of my General Paediatrics training, taking what could generously be described as the “scenic route” through the program while raising three small children along the way (see photo for the youngest mini). When I’m not at work, you’ll usually find me chasing a good coffee, following the footy, planning the next travel adventure, or searching for great food. I also love sleep, although my youngest child has made sure that’s mostly a theoretical hobby these days!
One of the things I’m most passionate about is supporting junior medical staff and helping create a positive, inclusive workplace culture. Training can be challenging, and I believe we’re at our best when we feel supported, valued, and connected. As Chief Registrar, I’m keen to help foster an environment where people enjoy coming to work, can thrive professionally, and feel comfortable bringing their authentic selves to the team.
