
Course summary
Monash Health International Medical Graduate Preparation (MiPreP) Program at its core is a three-month course specifically designed for International Medical Graduates (IMGs). The course is boutique, with a small group of only 12 participants, intensive and highly supported with a dedicated senior doctor and Medical Education Officer. The course is aimed at IMGs already in Australia, who wish to enter the Australian medical workforce and involves:
- Two x 4-week clinical attachments as a MiPreP Honorary HMO in Emergency, General Medicine/Aged Care/Renal within Monash Health across sites (Clayton, Kingston, Dandenong, Casey), with the possibility of one optional rural 4-week clinical attachment at one of our clinical partners.
- Two x 2-week intensive learning blocks at Monash Health Clayton.
Intensive learning Block 1:
This block, in preparation for the first clinical attachment includes:
- ‘Hitting the ground running’ (HTGR) course designed by the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (orientation to Australian healthcare system) (valued at over A$500).
- Orientation to Monash Health essential training including using and prescribing with the Electronic Medical Record, Basic Life Support and online education modules focused on key areas of quality care, for example, safe prescribing, falls and delirium.
- Procedural skills workshops with simulation models for common procedures such as intravenous cannulation, urinary catheter and nasogastric tube insertion.
- Training sessions covering core medical conditions and expected clinical care in Australian hospitals for clinical attachment.
- Full access to Monash Health learning resources. This includes all intern/HMO tutorials, Grand Rounds, and Monash Health library resources including Up to date anywhere and BMJ Learning online modules.
- Learning with and from other participants in a small group setting.
Clinical attachment: Emergency
- Working as an honorary HMO in Emergency, as an additional HMO in the unit, working alongside the regular HMOs and with similar opportunities and expectations (no more than 2 MiPreP participants will be assigned to one unit).
- Attend unit teaching and meetings
- Ongoing supervision, feedback on clinical performance and advice with senior medical staff, to enable you to develop your skills
Intensive learning Block 2:
This block occurs in between the clinical attachments. It includes:
- Full day at Monash Simulation involving practicing scenarios involving emergency care of deteriorating patients and communication skills for IMGs (value over A$500).
- Communication skills workshops covering ‘how to communicate the Australian way’.
- Training sessions covering core medical conditions and expected clinical care in Australian hospitals for clinical attachment.
Clinical attachment: General Medicine, Aged Care or Renal
- Practicing as an honorary HMO in General Medicine, Aged Care or Renal, as a supernumerary HMO in the unit, working alongside the routine HMOs and with similar opportunities and expectations (maximum of 2 MiPreP participants will be assigned to one unit).
- Attend unit teaching and meetings.
- Supervision and feedback on clinical performance and advice with senior medical staff, to enable you to develop your skills.
- Final detailed summary feedback with MiPreP Program senior doctor and Medical Education Officer including career opportunities discussion.
Optional Rural Clinical Attachment: ED, Gen Med/ CCU, O&G, Gen Surg, Paediatrics, or Anaesthetics
- Practicing as an honorary HMO in ED, Gen Med/CCU, O&G, Gen Surg, Paediatrics or Anaesthetics, as a supernumerary HMO in the unit, working alongside the routine HMOs and with similar opportunities and expectations (maximum of 1 MiPreP participant will be assigned to one unit).
- Attend unit teaching and meetings.
- Supervision and feedback on clinical performance and advice with senior medical staff, to enable you to develop your skills.
- Final detailed summary feedback with senior doctor including career opportunities discussion.
Course frequency
The course is currently planned to run three times across 2026 with up to 12 participants in each course.
Please note that participation in the course does not guarantee future employment with Monash Health.
Entry requirements
- Passed AMC MCQ examination (part 1)
- Australian citizenship or permanent resident
- Competent in English as outlined in the Medical Board of Australian Registration Standard: English Language skills.
- Undergraduate medical degree and Internship completed in the country of study
- Eligible for limited or provisional registration with AHPRA
- Highly desirable:
- Passed Australian Medical Council Clinical Examination
- Previously practiced medicine for more than 2 years
- Experience of clinical practice within the last 2 years
- Graduated and/or substantial paid employment as a doctor within the last 5 years
Application and Fees
$A 10,800 (+10% GST) including all costs for HTGR, Monash Simulation courses and assistance with AHPRA registration*.
*AHPRA registration fees not included
- The full amount must be paid prior to accepting the position and no refund is available.
- If you have completed the Hitting The Ground Running (HTGR) with PMCV, then the component of the MiPreP fee allocated to HTGR will be deducted from the total once you have provided evidence of this.
The MiPreP honorary HMOs will need to maintain Doctors-In-Training professional indemnity insurance.
