Haematology Fellow Dr Ashwini Bennett has been awarded the prestigious CSL-Behring Prof Heimburger award, a globally competitive coagulation research grant.
Dr Bennett’s work will explore the relationship between neutrophil extracellular traps (NETS), a novel marker of thrombosis, in a broad range of haematological conditions associated with thrombosis such as sickle cell disease and myeloproliferative neoplasms.
She will also explore the diagnostic utility of NETS levels in assessing patients with suspected venous thrombosis and then the change in NETS levels over time for patients diagnosed with venous thrombosis who are being treated with anticoagulant therapy.
This work will be a collaborative study performed in conjunction with the research lab of Associate Professor Robert Andrews at the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases (ABCD) and the Haematology Research unit at Monash Medical Centre.
