Congratulations Daniela Ulrich, David Oehme, Karinna Fyfe and Lauren Sanders who are the four recipients of the inaugural School of Clinical Sciences Head of School’s PhD Excellence Award. This was in recognition of the outstanding quality of their PhD thesis and publications generated in their fields of research.
Dr Daniela Ulrich, international student and gynaecologist in training, focused on developing a tissue engineering approach for treating pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Daniela demonstrated the potential of a novel source of stem cells for treating POP that improved the tissue response.

Advanced neurosurgical trainee Dr David Oehme was supervised by MIMR-PHI Institute’s Professor Graham Jenkin for his research into ‘Mesenchymal progenitor cell mediated lumbar intervertebral disc regeneration’.

Dr Karinna Fyfe investigated detailed physiological studies during sleep in infants. Karinna assessed the effects of prone sleeping on cerebral oxygenation in preterm infants.

In ground-breaking translational research at the School of Clinical Sciences, Dr Lauren Sanders investigated the management of Transient Ischaemic Attack. Lauren evaluated the safety, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an Australian-first model of rapid TIP care (the Monash M3T model), based predominantly on outpatient management. Significantly, Lauren’s work is now beginning to change the face of TIA management nationally and has attracted attention in the US.
Former MBBS/PhD student Lauren was also a recipient of the prestigious Peter Bladin New Investigator Award from the Stroke Society of Australasia.

Well done everyone!
